In November 1820 the Nantucket whaler Essex was rammed by a sperm whale and slowly began sinking. The crew abandoned the ship in 3 frail rowing boats. There followed 90 days of privation and suffering at sea. This is the account of one of the eight survivors. The book has been edited for a youth readership.
