On 23rd Mar 1937, the US submarine Squalus fell 243 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic, trapping 59 men within her. Their chance of rescue seemed almost hopeless. The only hope lay with Charles Bowers Momsen and his ‘Momsen Lung’. The rescue of the Squalus would vindicate his invention. Momsen took charge of the diving operations. A huge rescue chamber was lowered to the submarine and sealed against the hatch to enable trapped men to be rescued. What followed was a brilliant improvisation that made US naval history
