150 miles west of the Scottish coast is the island of St Kilda. For 2,000 years the inhabitants were almost completely isolated from the rest of the world. Disease and crime were almost non-existent. But in the 19th century the island was discovered’ by people who brought money, disease and despotism. The population dwindled until in 1930 the few remaining islanders agreed to be evacuated because they could no longer support themselves.
