HDS Visit to Denmark
May 2006
|
Stone Fishing, 2-bolt Helmets and Cans of Lager.
An account of the Society’s visit to Denmark, May 2006.
Denmark has a rich diving history, one that is well
served by the Danish Historical Diving Society, Dykkehistorisk
Selskab. The Society has come a long way since its formation in
1996, attracting a large and active membership, building strong
links with military, commercial and amateur diving and establishing
a remarkable museum, for example. An exchange visit had been talked
of for some time and last year the HDS had the pleasure of hosting
a large party of visitors from Denmark.

The trip had many highlights:
- a visit to an Amber Museum
- a remarkable account by Sven Erik Jørgensen about how
the Daniish Resistance had attempted to sink the German light
cruiser Nürnberg which was moored alongside at Copenhagen
Freeport - for the full story see Sven’s account in Dykkehistorisk
Tidsskrift (11), 2000, pp4-12, translated and reprinted in Historical
Diving Times, issue 31, pp12-15
- the very first Danish Historical Diving Walk - Kastellet, King's
Gate, Kongens Livjæger-Korps Museum, Den Lille Havfrue or
The Little Mermaid Statue, memorial to the Dannebrog
- Switzer salvage company
- Rouquayrol Denayrouze helmets
- museum’ of the Den Blå Avis company
