THE
HISTORICAL DIVING SOCIETY AWARD
Terms of Reference
Purpose
To be presented to the member(s) who, in the opinion of the judges
has(have) done the most to contribute to the work and promotion
of the Society during the previous year.
Judging Panel
This is to comprise all the elected members of the Historical
Diving Society Committee.
Presentation
The Award will normally be presented annually at the Societys
Annual Dinner and the winner will keep it for one year.
Description
The trophy is the property of the Society and comprises a Siebe,
Gorman diving knife mounted on an oak base and surrounded by shields
engraved with winners names.

ART BACHRACH LITERARY AWARD
Terms of Reference
Purpose
To recognise an important and significant contribution to the
literature of diving history, published as an article or articles
or in book form within the two previous calendar years of the
Award's presentation1. The Award is
not limited to members of the Historical Diving Society (HDS)
nor to publication in any of the Society's publications. Nominations
may be made by any person interested in diving history and will
be accepted up to the 1st June of the year the Award is presented.
Nominations should be addressed to the Secretary of the Society
and must include the publishing history and, in the case of an
article or articles, a copy.
Judging Panel
Will consist of Dr.Bachrach and the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and
Newsletter Editor of the HDS. In addition, the Editor of the magazine
Diver and the previous years winner will be asked to serve.
The Panel may vary from year to year to represent as broad a view
as possible of the historical diving community.
Each member of the Judging Panel will have one vote, irrespective
of the number of positions or offices held. In the case of equal
votes being cast the HDS Chairman will cast the deciding vote.
The Award does not have to be presented in a year for which the
Judging Panel feel that there is no suitable candidate. Dr.Bachrach
is not eligible to receive the award, and in the event of a Panel
member being nominated, he or she will be barred from serving.
Presentation
The award will be presented by Dr.Bachrach at the Historical
Diving Societys Annual Dinner. In the absence of Dr.Bachrach
the award will be presented by the Chairman.
Description
The Award, designed by Bob Straight, takes the form of an engraved
wall plaque depicting Halley's Diving Bell in bas-relief. Each
recipient will received a unique copy to keep in perpetuity.
Note1: Nominations for year 3 would be for publication
in years 1 and 2.
REG
VALLINTINE AWARD FOR HISTORICAL DIVING ACHIEVEMENT
Terms of Reference
Purpose
To recognise diving achievements which are, or will become, part
of diving history. The Award may also be given to those contributing
to a greater knowledge of diving history through the organisation
of expeditions, research projects or publications. The Award is
not limited to members of the History Diving Society (HDS) and
is international in scope.
Judging Panel
Comprises Reg Vallintine, the HDS Chairman, Vice Chairman, Honorary
Secretary, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor. Each member will have
one vote irrespective of the number of positions or offices held.
In the case of equal votes being cast for two candidates, the
HDS Chairman will have a casting vote. The Award does not have
to be presented in a year for which the judging panel feel there
is no suitable candidate. Reg Vallintine is ineligible to receive
the Award.
Presentation
The Award will normally be presented by Reg Vallintine at the
HDS Annual Dinner and the winner will keep it for one year. The
winners will also be presented with replicas to keep permanently.
Description
The trophy was presented to the HDS by Reg Vallintine in October
1994 and has become the property of the Society. It comprises
a representation of the original 1832 Deane helmet, constructed
in cold cast copper by Guy Hardern of Rushworth Sculpture, standing
on an African mahogany base with engraving by Avenue Engraving
of Richmond.
THE
NAUTIEK TROPHY
Terms of Reference
Introduction
The Nautiek Trophy was presented to the Historical Diving Society
by Jan de Groot in 1997, and was first awarded in 1998.
Purpose
The Trophy is to be awarded for an exhibition which, in the opinion
of the judging panel has done the most to forward the knowledge
of diving history to the general public, whether by a unique exhibition
in the previous calendar year, or by an ongoing display. The Trophy
does not have to awarded in a year for which the Judging Panel
feel there is no suitable candidate.
Judging Panel
Will comprise the elected Committee of the Historical Diving
Society.
Procedure
Nominations may be made by any person or organisation and should
be addressed to the Secretary of the Historical Diving Society.
They must be received by June 1st of the year of nomination. The
full title and address of the nominee and sufficient material
to support the nomination must be included.
Presentation
The winner will be notified in August and invited to attend the
presentation, which will be at the Historical Diving Society's
Annual Dinner, held in November. The winner will hold the Trophy
for one year.
Description
The Trophy comprises a 1/10th scale model of the Dutch Navy version
of a Siebe Gorman helmet, mounted on a wooden base. It is accompanied
by a wooden plaque engraved with the winner's name or title.

FRANK
OSCHMAN TROPHY
Terms of Reference
Purpose
To recognise, on an annual basis, an important and significant
contribution to the preservation, renovation and use of historical
diving equipment.
Nominations
a. May be for individuals, groups or organisations.
b. Are not limited to members of the Historical Diving Society.
c. Made be made by any person to the Secretary of the Historical
Diving Society by the 1st June of the year of the award, together
with reasons for the nomination.
Judging Panel
Will comprise the elected Committee of the Historical Diving
Society, who will decide by simple majority. In the event of a
committee member being nominated he/she will be excluded from
the decision making process.
Presentation
Will be made at the Annual Dinner of the Historical Diving Society,
by an appropriate individual chosen by the committee.
Description
The trophy is a cut crystal glass bearing the Historical Diving
Society name and logo, and the words 'Frank Oschman Trophy'.
Frank Oschman was an early member of the Society, and a respected
enthusiast of historical working equipment. He died in 1993. |
