Mike Watts, long time society member and former Working Equipment Oficer and Membership Secretary, was laid to rest next to his wife’s grave in the cemetery of St. Peter’s Church, Lodsworth, the lovely Sussex village that had been their home for many years. Mourners included a strong contingent of society members, including Adrian Barak who read Henry Scott Holland’s poem All is Well.
It is my sad task to record that Mike, one of the society’s earliest members, passed away on the 29th March. Mike was the society’s Working Equipment Group Officer from 1995 to 1999 and also the Membership Secretary from 1996 to 2002. Although from a non-diving background, Mike’s enthusiasm, business skills and great personal charm were of immense value to the society. A full obituary will appear in Historical Diving Times, but perhaps the most fitting epitaph for this brief notice is that he was ‘One of Nature’s Gentlemen’.
Mike’s funeral will take place at Lodsworth Parish Church (between Petworth and Midhurst) on Monday 15th April at 2.30pm.
